The
fear of continued hardships in Sweden, the allure
of bountiful amounts of farmland in America, the
draw of superior wages, and the reassurance of religious
liberty worked hand in hand with encouraging letters
from Swedes already in America, reports of gold,
and the promise of freedom created a constant flow
of Swedish immigration that lasted well beyond the
turn of the 20th century. Over one million Swedish
immigrants entered this country, primarily between
the years of 1840 and 1914. Only Norway and Ireland
have experienced higher emigration.(8)
So where did they all go?
