Name
Origin:
Crawford County is named for William H. Crawford, who served as
United States Secretary of War from 1815-1816 and United States
Secretary of the Treasury from 1816-1825. He served as United
States Ambassador to France from 1813-1815 and ran for President
of the United States in 1824. Prior to coming to Arkansas, Crawford
served in the United States Senate from 1807-1813 representing
the state of Georgia during which time he held the position of
President pro tempore of the Senate from 1812-1813.
